Semaglutide reduced major adverse cardiovascular events — cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack, non-fatal stroke — by about 20% compared with placebo, on top of standard care. The FDA approved the indication in March 2024.
That matters a great deal in southeast Queens, where heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes cluster in the same households. The coverage conversation, honestly

Some plans do cover semaglutide for weight management, particularly where there is a qualifying diagnosis such as type 2 diabetes or a BMI over 30. Many plans still exclude weight-loss drugs as a category, regardless of your BMI. Prior authorization is common, and an approval can be reversed at the next plan year.
